Attracted by the noise, Lawyer Grosvenor crossed to the window of his office. What he saw sent him hurrying from the building and in the wake of the crowd that was escorting the Kid to the marshal’s office. Leading four horses, three of which carried significant shapes draped over their saddles, the Kid headed something of a procession through town. Dusty and the other deputies came on to the sidewalk as their companion drew rein before the office building.

‘It’s done,’ he told them.

‘Who were they?’ Dusty asked, walking towards the horses and reaching up at the tarp covering one’s burden.

‘Bellamy and a couple of hide-hunters he’d hired to thin us out a mite,’ the Kid replied. ‘And I wouldn’t uncover him out here, was I you. He tried to shoot ole Thunder and missed.’

Having seen the white’s work, Dusty accepted the hint. Better to leave the bodies until they were in the privacy of the undertaker’s yard than to expose such a sight to the view of the crowd.

‘What’s happened?’ Grosvenor demanded, thrusting his way through the crowd.

‘You mind that business deal your client, Mr. Bellamy, went on, counsellor?’ the Kid asked, cold eyes raking the lawyer from head to foot.

‘Y-yes,’ Grosvenor replied, darting worried glances at the horses.

‘It just fell through,’ said the Kid.
